Mam, My Best Friend…
I look across the room and there you are in your best dress,
As I get closer I realise that you're my best friend and should've said,
As I come and sit beside you, I knew I had to put your make up on,
I look at your face with no words nor a smile, I can't believe you're gone!
Once in your night gown, now laid to rest,
In this room, no sound, in your best dress,
As I make you pretty for the world,
Tomorrow: 41 and still a scared little girl.
My best friend, my mam, once known to be in her night gown, now wearing her best dress,
Lying in a silk woven bath, I have memories of us talking the night away, now, not a sound as you lay to rest,
The stillness in this room overshadows the many times we couldn't stop laughing,
I can't comprehend this silence while the sound of a tear drops on your coffin.
My heart plays a violin sound, the sound of your voice telling me you're so proud of me,
I hear the piano you used to play, you sat with me and love came from every key,
As I brush your paper thin skin putting colour in your cheeks,
I try not to think of the pain you suffered in your last few weeks.
Once in your night gown, now laid to rest,
In this room, no sound, in your best dress,
As I make you pretty for the world,
Tomorrow: 41 and still a scared little girl.
I remember the song you used to sing to me while I closed my eyes:
"hush little baby don't you cry, mamma's gonna stay strong by your side"
"hush little baby don't you cry, mamma's gonna buy you a mockingbird"
"if that mockingbird don't sing, mamma's gonna buy you a diamond ring"
"if that diamond ring don't shine, mamma's gonna love you all the while".
As I sit next to you by your side, I hold your hand as I want your eyes to open,
Your face is a picture of beauty, but your fingers, your fingers are frozen,
All I need to do is pick up your favourite shoes, I'll be back tonight to put them on,
I'll say goodbye for now, but not forever, because in my heart I'll feel you strong.
Once in your night gown, now laid to rest,
In this room, no sound, in your best dress,
As I make you pretty for the world,
Tomorrow: 41 and still a scared little girl.
As I lay you to rest,
You're still my best friend,
Mam, goodbye for now,
No longer in your night gown...
